This wonderful event has been a longstanding fundraiser in Burke County, originating with Grace Healthcare Foundation and later for Appalachian Family Innovations. In 2010, the torch was passed to Burke County United Way, but the beneficiaries – our Burke County children – remain the same.
This year’s Toast of the Town continues to hold up before the community the dire need of our children for safe and violence free families. Child abuse and neglect is one of the top five priority areas identified by Burke County United Way’s Roadmap to Impact planning process. You, as community donors, verified the hard numbers indicating Burke was sixth highest in the state for child abuse and neglect, and gave us marching orders to place children at the top of our priority list.
Fifty percent of Burke County's children are born into poverty, a proven indicator that directly correlates to the demand for social programs.
